The IDF has presented the government with information regarding reservists simultaneously engaged in the Iron Swords War and participating in municipal elections across Israel. If the municipal elections proceed amidst the ongoing conflict, hundreds of military personnel, including soldiers and officers, may be unable to participate in the election campaign due to the challenges of being released from active duty.
The data reveals that 688 reservists on electoral lists in 144 local authorities cannot be released from service, as they hold critical military professions crucial during wartime, and their absence could significantly impact the IDF's combat effectiveness.
While 1,141 reservists participating in municipal elections may potentially be released, it's crucial to consider that many soldiers and officers vehemently oppose being "forcefully released" while their comrades continue to fight in the Gaza Strip, risking their lives.
Reservists are urging a balance between their right to perform military duty and the defense of their country, and their right to vote and run for office, proposing a postponement of the elections. Some have chosen to withdraw their candidacies to avoid compromising the country's defense capability during the ongoing war.
The government is set to discuss the fate of municipal elections at its upcoming meeting on Sunday, December 31. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, and other government officials have consistently advocated for postponing the elections, citing potential harm to reservists involved in local government campaigns amid the war.
