Wounded IDF soldier dies from fungal infection in Gaza

Two weeks ago, an IDF soldier was taken to Asuta Hospital in Ashdod with injuries to his limbs. A few days later, doctors determined that during his time in Gaza the wounded soldier had become infected with two different types of pathogenic fungi.

Despite all efforts of doctors, including turning to experimental drugs and leading specialists, the soldier died.

According to the Ministry of Health, about 10 more military personnel are hospitalized in Israeli hospitals with fungal infections that they brought from the Gaza Strip.

According Kan 11, the pathogens are little known in Israel, and doctors associate their spread with the tunnels of the Gaza Strip.

Next week, the ministry will hold an emergency meeting with leading epidemiologists, mycologists and military medical leaders to prevent an outbreak of these pathogens among military personnel in Gaza.
