CNN reports that their independent investigation has found that at least 16 cemeteries were desecrated during Israeli military operations in the Gaza sector.
The editorial team claims that gravestones were destroyed, graves were opened, and, in some cases, buried bodies were unearthed in the desecrated cemeteries.
CNN reached these conclusions based on satellite imagery, social media footage, and reports from journalists who visited the Gaza sector accompanied by the IDF.
According to the CNN article, a spokesperson for the IDF could not explain the destruction of the 16 cemeteries CNN provided coordinates for. However, he stated that the military sometimes has "no other choice," as Hamas uses cemeteries for military purposes."
On January 18, NBC News also asked the IDF to comment on Gaza sector residents' accusations of desecrating a cemetery near Khan Yunis. The IDF responded that Israeli military personnel were searching the cemetery for the bodies of deceased hostages."
