Coalition Chairman Ofir Katz announced that the bill regarding city rabbis has been removed from the agenda. He stated that the decision was made after consulting with the leaders of the coalition factions, including Shas leader Aryeh Deri.
Katz emphasized that pushing for controversial legislation at this time is "inappropriate." He remarked, "Our priority today should be to strive for national unity as much as possible."
The day before, factions led by Benny Gantz and Gideon Sa'ar, namely Machane Mamlachti and Yamin Mamlakhti, declared their intention to protest against advancing the "law on rabbis" in its first reading, which is part of the government's legal reform.
According to a pre-existing agreement reached before Gantz and Sa'ar joined the government, they have the authority to veto legislation that lacks widespread support and is unrelated to national defense.
The bill seeks to transfer certain powers from local authorities to the Minister of Religious Affairs, raising concerns among critics that it could result in the appointment of city rabbis who do not align with local needs.
