Brig. Gen. Amit Saar, head of the Military Intelligence Research Department, has resigned and will leave the service in the coming days.
Although Saar is currently the highest-ranking military officer to resign following acknowledgment of responsibility for the intelligence failure on October 7, the reasons for his retirement are medical.
According to media reports, Saar has been diagnosed with cancer.
Saar has led the key department of AMAN since 2020 and was considered an expert on the Gaza Strip. Brig. Gen Itai Baron, former head of the department, will temporarily replace Saar.
