Netanyahu's next military secretary to become first Maj. Gen. from 1990s post-Soviet aliyah
Brig. Gen. Roman Gofman has been appointed Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's military secretary, becoming the first major general from the 1990s post-Soviet aliyah.
Netanyahu made the decision after consulting with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi. Gofman will be promoted to the rank of major general, becoming the first major general among the representatives of the 1990s post-Soviet aliyah.
The military secretary to the head of government assists the prime minister in making decisions in the defense sphere, which are not only related to the army. The prime minister devotes a lot of time and attention to security issues, and the position requires great responsibility.
Roman Gofman was born in Mazyr, Belarus. He was also the first representative of the 1990s post-Soviet aliyah to receive the rank of brigadier general. He commanded the 7th Armored Brigade "Saar mi-Golan" and the 210th Territorial Division "Bashan" deployed in the Golan Heights. On October 7, 2023, while serving as the commander of the Tzeelim training base, Roman Gofman went to Sderot to fight Hamas terrorists who attacked Israel. He was seriously wounded in battle.
"Napoleon said that every soldier carries a Marshal's baton in his knapsack, and the founders of the IDF said that all servicemembers should approach each position as if it were the last in their careers. I'm somewhere in between. We need to focus on what is happening here and now. I hope to benefit the people of Israel in this position," Roman Gofman told The News of Israel about the position.
