1,645 fallen police officers honored at Mount Herzl ceremony
On Remembrance Day (Yom HaZikaron), an official memorial ceremony honored the 1,645 police officers who have died in the line of duty since the establishment of the State of Israel.
Since the last Remembrance Day, 79 fallen police officers have been added to this list, including 62 killed during the war in Gaza. On October 7, 2023, 58 police officers and members of the MAGAV Border Police died defending southern Israel from a Hamas terrorist invasion.
The ceremony, held at the Mount Herzl Military Cemetery police station in Jerusalem, was attended by Inspector General Yaakov Shabtai, head of the Israeli Police, Rafael Engel, Director General of the Ministry of National Security, representatives of the victims' families, senior police officers, and rank-and-file officers.
Addressing the gathering, Inspector General Yaakov Shabtai stated, 'Every year, we honor the memory of police officers killed in terrorist attacks and military actions. This year, however, the pain in our hearts has grown exponentially. Military operations are ongoing, and we mourn our fallen heroes, praying that this long list and the high cost do not continue to grow.
