Israeli arrested by Shin Bet at airport following trip to Iraq
A 24-year-old resident of Bnei Brak was detained at Ben Gurion Airport upon his return to Israel by Shin Bet officers after his behavior raised suspicion among airport security officials.
Following a brief interrogation, it was revealed that the man had used his second passport, a foreign national passport, to travel to Iraq. Visits to Iraq are prohibited by law due to hostile relations between the two countries.
After further questioning, the suspect was transported to the Shin Bet detention center for additional investigation to determine whether he was involved in any crimes against state security. It was discovered that he had visited Iraq via a third country, utilizing a foreign passport from his second citizenship.
The Tel Aviv Magistrate's Court imposed a publication ban on the investigation details and extended the suspect's detention. The suspect maintained that his travels were solely for tourism purposes.
After several weeks of investigation, the Shin Bet transferred the case to the police, ruling out espionage and other crimes against state security.
