The Biden administration believes that the IDF has amassed enough troops on the edge of the city of Rafah in southern Gaza to begin a full-scale incursion, CNN reports.
The White House does not rule out that such an operation could begin in the coming days.
One of the officials also warned that Israel has not come anywhere close to making adequate preparations in terms of infrastructure related to food, hygiene, and shelter for over a million civilians currently residing in Rafah who will be forced to evacuate.
However, Washington is not confident that Israel will proceed with a full-scale operation in Rafah, considering the protests and demands from US authorities. Such a move would be a "direct defiance of President Joe Biden," according to two senior administration officials.
