Opposition leader, Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid), criticized the government for advancing the draft law.
"This right-wing government is pushing a law that encourages service evasion, leaving our soldiers to fend for themselves on the battlefield," Lapid said during a faction meeting.
"Every Jewish mother should know who these individuals are who abandoned our fighters in the midst of a war for political gain. Everyone who votes for this bill will be complicit in the crime," Lapid added.
Lapid also announced plans to meet with Machane Mamlachti leader Benny Gantz to coordinate further opposition efforts.
A vote on the draft law is expected around midnight. Due to opposition within the Likud faction, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is considering making it a vote of confidence in the government. If so, ministers, including Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, could not vote against it.
