The CIA has concluded that Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas in the Gaza Strip, is under increasing pressure from the leadership of the group's military wing to agree to a ceasefire, CNN reports.
According to CNN, this assessment was presented by CIA Director Bill Burns at a closed conference on July 13. He stated that Sinwar is indifferent to the loss of lives but does not want to be blamed for the horrific suffering of Gaza's residents.
Burns noted that this pressure from war-weary field commanders is a relatively new phenomenon, having begun about two weeks ago. However, Sinwar, who is believed to be located tens of meters underground in Khan Yunis, continues to make decisions.
Burns acts as the main American mediator in the negotiations between Israel and Hamas. He believes that conditions have been established for both sides of the conflict to reach an agreement on a ceasefire.
