Salam Fayyad declines to lead Gaza after the war
Former prime minister of the Palestinian Authority, Salam Fayyad, has stated that he is not interested in leading the Gaza Strip after the end of the ground offensive. He noted that such discussions are only happening in the West.
"I am not part of the Western debate about the future of the Gaza Strip, and I will not be. This internal Palestinian issue must be resolved nationally based on consensus. Otherwise, we will perpetuate division and the existence of two Palestinian entities," he said.
Fayyad, who also holds American citizenship, led the PA government from 2005 to 2013. He was seen as a pragmatic liberal who could find common ground with both Israel and the United States. In recent years, the retired politician has been teaching at Princeton University.
Al Arabiya reported the possibility of Fayyad becoming the sector's future leader. According to the channel, the US administration has already begun to check things out before a possible appointment.
