The Iraqi Foreign Ministry on Saturday summoned the U.S. chargé d'affairs to Baghdad to protest the U.S. attacks in Iraq. He was handed an official note of protest over the airstrikes on the country, which killed 16 people as a result of American airstrikes on Iraqi territory.
"The strikes targeted areas in Akashat and Al-Qa'im, including locations where our forces are based, some of which are near residential areas. Sixteen were killed, and at least 23 were injured," the Iraqi government reported, noting that there were civilians among the casualties.
The U.S. actions were in response to an attack by pro-Iranian groups operating in Iraq on an American base in eastern Jordan, resulting in the deaths of three U.S. troopers.
The pro-Iranian group Popular Mobilization Forces reported the deaths of their 16 fighters. While its combat units are part of Iraq's armed forces, in practice, it operates under the command of the Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
