Iraqi authorities are purchasing weapons from civilians
Iraqi Interior Minister Abdul Amir al-Shammari announced a state program to buy weapons from the public during the opening ceremony of the police headquarters in northern Basra province.
The minister also highlighted the improved reliability of border control, particularly in the central and southern regions. Two weeks ago, construction finished on a 160-kilometer section of a concrete wall along the border with Syria, which stretches a total of 599 kilometers.
Official figures indicate that the population possesses seven million weapons, including heavy arms. Citizens are encouraged to register their weapons on a special portal and then surrender them to authorities for compensation.
It's worth noting that Iraq is facing challenges in securing its borders. Turkish and Iranian troops cross it in efforts against militants, while smugglers and terrorists also exploit border crossings.
