Libération: Hezbollah's tunnels are more dangerous than Hamas' ones
On February 18, the French daily newspaper Libération published an article dedicated to Hezbollah's tunnels, which the journalists claim to be much more dangerous than Hamas tunnels in the Gaza Strip.
The article states that the Shiite terrorist group, with the help of North Korea, has been building an underground defense system since the 1980s in preparation for an Israeli invasion.
The tunnels are carved into rock at depths ranging from 40 to 80 meters. These tunnels are more complex and more dangerous than those in Gaza, and the collapse of some of them could cause earthquakes or landslides.
According to Libération, during the latest round of confrontation, the IDF used white phosphorus munitions in southern Lebanon to burn vegetation and detect tunnel entrances. The journalists say after October 7, the IDF discovered and destroyed 12 tunnel entrances belonging to Hezbollah.
Libération quotes the head of the Alma Research and Education Center, Tal Beeri, who in January told the Times of Israel that civilian companies were involved in tunnel construction under the guise of agricultural or construction work in Shiite communities in southern Lebanon.
Construction was carried out under the control of the company called Jihad Construction. Tunnels were dug manually using sledgehammers or quieter hydraulic equipment. According to estimates, one worker can dig about 15 meters per month.
The Lebanese environmental organization Green Without Borders (GWB) was sanctioned by the US as it serves as a cover for tunnel construction and the building of underground weapon depots.
A report on Hezbollah's tunnels published by the Alma Research and Education Center in 2021 says that the tunnels pass through strategic points in southern Lebanon and connect Beirut with the Beqaa Valley.
