The Hague court reviews legality of 'Israeli occupation'
The International Court of Justice in The Hague has initiated six days of hearings regarding the legality of Israeli control over Judea and Samaria. Near the building, there's an anti-Israeli demonstration drawing hundreds of participants.
The decision for these hearings was made in December 2022 on the Palestinian initiative by the UN General Assembly. Once concluded, the court will issue an advisory decision, which isn't legally binding like its verdicts. Nevertheless, a negative ruling could weaken Israel's position internationally.
It's important to note that while international law prohibits annexation, it acknowledges states' rights to occupy territories on a temporary basis.
Israel doesn't recognize the court's jurisdiction and has abstained from sending representatives to the hearing. This differs from cases of investigating allegations of genocide, where the court's jurisdiction is universal.
