World Health Organization chief Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus reported that for the first time since October, the agency was able to visit Al-Awda and Kamal Adwan hospitals located in the Gaza Strip. He noted that hospital buildings are practically destroyed.
"In northern Gaza, there are severe levels of malnutrition. Children are dying of starvation, and there are serious shortages of fuel, food, and medical supplies. At least ten children have died of hunger. The situation at Al-Awda Hospital is particularly appalling, as one of the buildings is destroyed," he wrote on X.
UN representatives state that a quarter of the population of the Gaza Strip is suffering from catastrophic levels of food insecurity, and one in six children under the age of two in the north is suffering from acute malnutrition. "These tragic and horrific deaths are man-made, predictable, and entirely preventable," they emphasize.
UNICEF representative James Elder stated that the level of malnutrition among children under the age of five in the north of the sector is three times higher than in Rafah. Access to aid in the north has been significantly limited since the beginning of the conflict.
