Five members of the UK's Special Air Service (SAS) have been arrested by military authorities on suspicion of committing war crimes during a mission in Syria.

The arrest follows an incident from two years ago when they fatally shot an Islamic State militant under the suspicion that he was wearing a suicide vest. Subsequent examination revealed that he was not equipped with a belt.

This is presently the sole known case of British military personnel being arrested over suspicions related to service in Syria and Iraq.

Command officials assert that the soldiers should have apprehended the militant rather than resorting to lethal force.

The SAS is renowned as one of the world's premier special forces units. Throughout the campaign against ISIS, it conducted reconnaissance missions, provided guidance to aircraft targeting, and executed operations aimed at capturing field commanders.
