US Army Vessel General Frank S. Besson (LSV-1) has departed its base in Virginia and is heading to the Eastern Mediterranean. The US Central Command says it's carrying equipment to build a temporary pier off the coast of Gaza to deliver vital humanitarian supplies.

The logistics support vessel General Frank S. Besson can navigate in shallow waters and unload aid through roll-on/roll-off ramps.

President Biden announced earlier the US would provide humanitarian assistance to Gaza by sea. According to the US President, this will allow the sector to receive two million food rations daily.

Israel will be responsible for securing the port. The Pentagon has said it could take up to 60 days to build the port with the help of 1,000 troops, who wouldn't go ashore.

The UN has warned that famine in the Gaza Strip is "almost inevitable," and children are starving to death.
