US transfers captured Iranian weapons intended for Houthis to Ukraine
The US Army Central Command has announced the transfer of thousands of small arms to Ukraine, captured during an operation to thwart Iranian supplies to the Houthis in Yemen.
The transfer occurred approximately a week ago, with the Ukrainian army receiving 5,000 Kalashnikov assault rifles, along with machine guns, sniper rifles, RPG-7 grenade launchers, and 500,000 rounds of 7.62 mm caliber ammunition.
In a statement, the US military stated, "These weapons will aid Ukraine in defending against the Russian invasion. We will continue to take action to curb Iran's unlawful activities." It was also highlighted that the intercepted ships carrying weapons had no nationality.
Several months ago, American media reported the possibility of intercepted Iranian weapons being redirected to Ukraine. Leaders of Yemen's internationally recognized government have called for these weapons to be handed over to the Yemeni military.
