Islamist militants receiving weapons from Iran arrested in Jordan
The Jordanian authorities thwarted an Iranian attempt to deliver a significant shipment of weapons to the kingdom. The weapons were intended for Islamist groups aiming to destabilize Jordan through sabotage and terrorist activities.
According to Reuters, which cited sources in Jordan, the sender of the weapons was a pro-Iranian group operating in Syria. The intended recipient was identified as a cell associated with the Jordanian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, linked to the Palestinian group Hamas.
The weapons were seized in late March when security services apprehended members of the cell, who were Jordanian citizens of Palestinian descent.
Jordan, situated at the heart of the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and bordering Syria and Iraq—both allied with Iran—as well as Israel, has been proactive in maintaining security. Jordanian armed forces notably participated in repelling an Iranian airstrike on Israel.
