Israeli delegation visits Cairo to ease mounting rift between Israel and Egypt
On the morning of May 15, an Israeli delegation, led by the Coordinator of Government Activities in the Territories chief, Maj. Gen. Ghassan Alian, visited Cairo to address the relationship crisis between Israel and Egypt.
According to the Kan channel, the talks covered several issues, including the ongoing IDF operation and the closure of the Rafah border crossing from the Palestinian side.
The closure led Egypt to suspend the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza until the crossing reopens.
One of the main topics was the deteriorating bilateral relations, which worsened following the start of the operation in Rafah. Egyptian authorities have even threatened to downgrade diplomatic ties with Israel.
Kan reported that the parties discussed advancing the hostage deal. The Israeli delegation's goal was to find an alternative to closing the Rafah checkpoint and assure Cairo that the operation in Rafah would not be expanded without prior notification to Egypt.
