The Islamic Republic of Iran's Guardian Council spokesman Hadi Tahan Nazif stated that according to the constitution of the Islamic Republic of Iran, new presidential elections must be held within 50 days.
During this period, First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber will carry out the duties of the head of state.
"According to Article 131 of the Constitution of Iran, in case of death, dismissal, resignation, absence, or illness lasting longer than two months of the president, or when his term in office has ended and a new president has not been elected due to some impediments, or similar other circumstances, his vice president shall assume, with the approval of the Leader, the powers and functions of the president," Tahan-Nazif said per IRNA.
On the morning of May 20, Mokhber held an emergency government council meeting. He expressed his condolences to Ayatollah Khamenei over the death of the head of state, Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, and other officials who were on board the crashed helicopter.
Iran’s government cabinet also appoints Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Bagheri Kani as acting foreign minister following the death of Hossein Amir-Abdollahian in the helicopter crash.
