Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan condemned the assassination of Hamas political bureau chief Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran. Erdogan stated that Israel's goal was to demoralize and intimidate Palestinians. Referring to Haniyeh as his brother, he cursed those responsible for his death.

Recalling the assassinations of other Hamas leaders, Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi, Erdogan claimed these acts did not bring "Zionist barbarians" closer to their goals. "They will fail again today," Anadolu Agency quoted Erdogan.

The Turkish President called on Muslims to unite around Gaza and expressed support for the creation of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders with East Jerusalem as its capital.
