Next week, the Republic of Malawi, located in East Africa, will open its embassy in Israel. Malawi will become the 99th state to have a diplomatic mission in the Jewish state.
Negotiations between Jerusalem and Lilongwe to open a Malawian embassy in Jerusalem have been ongoing for the past three years. In 2021, during a visit to Israel, then-Foreign Minister, Eisenhower Mkaka, said his country would open an embassy in Jerusalem by the end of the year, but to date this has not been done.
The Republic of Malawi established diplomatic relations with Israel in 1964 and was one of three African countries that maintained ties with Israel following the Yom Kippur War, refusing to sever diplomatic relations.
By the end of November 2023, the Israeli airline Arkia opened direct flights between Tel Aviv and Lilongwe. The airline's main passengers are Malawian workers recruited to work in the agricultural sector in Israel
