U.S. administration: The Hague has no basis for accusing Israel of genocide
U.S. National Security Council spokesman John Kirby criticized the lawsuit against Israel by South Africa at the International Criminal Court in the Hague. "The genocide allegations lack any factual basis," he stated.
State Department spokesperson Matt Miller echoed similar sentiments. "Genocide is one of the most heinous crimes. Such allegations cannot be taken lightly. We believe South Africa's referral to the ICC is untimely and counterproductive," he added.
Last week, South African authorities referred Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip to the UN International Criminal Court, alleging violations of the Genocide Convention. The lawsuit claims that Israel's actions in the Gaza Strip are aimed at "destroying Palestinians."
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu held a series of consultations with the Ministry of Justice, military officials, and the National Security Council. Following the consultations, the country's political leadership decided to attempt to persuade the court to dismiss the lawsuit and prevent the issuance of a temporary decision that would require Israel to cease military operations in the Gaza Strip.
