Josep Borrell: Israel funded Hamas to undermine Fatah

European Union (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell claimed that Israel has been providing financial support to Hamas in order to undermine the Palestinian Authority, led by the Fatah party.

Borrell made these remarks during a speech at the University of Valladolid in Spain, as reported by The Times of Israel. However, he did not elaborate on the specifics of this alleged funding.

According to the Spanish agency EFE, Borrell stated, "Hamas has been receiving funding from Israel for many years to weaken Fatah."

Additionally, Borrell emphasized the importance of active involvement in achieving a two-state solution by all parties interested in promoting peace in the region. He suggested that nations supporting this goal may need to exert pressure on Israel to realize it.

Borrell also addressed the urgent need for a humanitarian ceasefire, the release of hostages, and an end to the conflict in the Gaza Strip.
