Oslo Rabbi Melchior: Norway faces highest level of antisemitism since World War II

In an interview with Ynet, Rabbi Joav Melchior of Oslo spoke about the high level of antisemitism in Norway. According to him, following the October 7 attacks, Norwegian Jews have been subjected to verbal and physical aggression, with the local press and politicians allowing themselves expressions that were previously unacceptable.

Melchior mentioned Norwegian Foreign Minister Espen Barth Eide, who participated in the Cairo conference two weeks after the October 7 attack. Eide was the only Western politician to blame Israel and not call for the release of the hostages. The rabbi also noted that the minister prohibited the King of Norway from sending a letter of support and condolence to Israel.

The Oslo rabbi spoke about the attacks on Norwegian Jews in recent months. The Jewish community numbers around 2,000 people, many of whom are considering emigration. Among the factors contributing to the rise in antisemitism, Joav Melchior cited the growing number of Muslims. According to him, the Jewish community is engaging in dialogue with those Muslims interested in changing the paradigm, but their number is extremely small lately.
