Alexei Navalny's Biography
Born on June 4, 1976, in the town of Butyn, Odintsovo district, Moscow region, Alexei Navalny's life journey saw him graduate from Alabinsk secondary school in 1993 at the age of 17, located in the military village of Kalininets near Moscow's Taraskovo.
Following this, from 1993 to 1998, he pursued studies at the Faculty of Law of the Peoples' Friendship University of Russia. Subsequently, he pursued further education in absentia, graduating from the Faculty of Finance and Credit of the Financial Academy in 2001.
Venturing into business, Navalny transitioned into politics in 2004, amidst repeated initiation of criminal cases against him under various pretexts.
Notable moments include his second-place finish in the 2013 Moscow mayoral elections and his announcement in December 2016 to participate in the Russian presidential elections, though he was not permitted to run.
From 2017 to 2020, Navalny led a significant protest movement in Russia and founded the Anti-Corruption Foundation.
His life took a critical turn on August 20, 2020, when he fell into a coma due to being poisoned by a chemical warfare agent from the Novichok group.
Following treatment in Omsk and Berlin, where independent investigators implicated Russian special services in the attempt on his life, Navalny faced a series of legal battles upon his return to Moscow.
He was sentenced to two years and eight months in a general regime colony by the Simonovsky Court of Moscow in February 2021, and subsequently to nine years in a maximum-security colony by the Lefortovo District Court of Moscow in March 2022.
Later, in August 2023, the Moscow City Court added another 19 years in a special regime colony on charges of creating an extremist community and other related offenses.
On February 16, 2024, Navalny passed away at the age of 47 in correctional colony No. 3 in the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous Okrug under circumstances suggesting possible foul play.
The handling of Navalny's body raised concerns, as it was withheld from his mother for an extended period.
