The US Supreme Court has ruled that former President Donald Trump is eligible to run for president and participate in the 2024 primary elections.
This decision overturns the previous ruling by the Colorado Supreme Court, which had barred Trump from participating in local primaries following his involvement in the storming of the US Capitol in January 2021, aimed at overturning the election results and disrupting Congress' certification of Joe Biden's victory. Similar decisions were later made in the states of Maine and Illinois.
On Monday, March 4, US Supreme Court justices unanimously overturned the Colorado Supreme Court's decision, citing the Constitution's 14th Amendment, which prohibits individuals from holding public office if they have engaged in insurrection.
The judges emphasized that the authority to disqualify a candidate from running should rest with the federal government rather than individual states.
In response to the Supreme Court's decision, Trump took to his social media platform, Truth, which he established, writing, “A big victory for America!!!”
The primaries in Maine and Colorado are scheduled for March 5.
