WP: Pentagon disappointed Israel didn't notify of airstrike on Iranian consulate in Damascus
According to Washington Post, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin complained to his Israeli counterpart Yoav Gallant that Washington wasn't notified of Israel's plans to attack the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1.
The Pentagon's official statement on the phone call between Defense Secretaries did not mention this. Moreover, Austin's office's message emphasized the US's continued readiness to support Israel.
Informed sources told WP that Austin and other senior Pentagon officials believe Israel should have informed Washington about the attack, as it could have consequences not only for Israel but also for American military personnel and Washington's interests in the region.
These sources suggest that if the Pentagon had known about the impending strike, Americans could have bolstered the defense of their troops and strategically positioned ships with missile defense systems on board, which could have protected both US forces and Israel.
The US and Israel continue to closely cooperate on the potential response to Iran's counterstrike if it happens.
Israel remains on high alert for retaliation from Iran for the strike, which killed several Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps commanders, including two generals.
