Sydney police have apprehended a 16-year-old assailant who attacked Assyrian Bishop of Australia Mar Mari Emmanuel with a knife during a sermon at the Church of Christ the Good Shepherd. Another individual was also injured in the incident.
Although the suspect was already known to the police, his name was not listed in the register of potential terrorists. NSW Police Commissioner Karen Webb stated that the teenager's actions were deemed an act of terrorism.
"This attack was driven by religious extremism, with the intention to instill fear in the public. The victims were fortunate to survive," Webb remarked. Investigators believe the assailant acted alone.
