On May 9, during the second semi-final of Eurovision in Malmo, thousands of pro-Palestinian activists chanted slogans like “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” and “Israel is guilty of genocide.” Swedish activist Greta Thunberg was seen among them.
The demonstration was planned beforehand, with the Israeli delegation's security service informed. Israeli security services are in contact with Swedish counterparts to ensure Eden Golan and her team's safety.
Not only were pro-Palestinian activists outside the Eurovision venue but also among the spectators. During the second dress rehearsal, boos were heard in the hall after Eden Golan's performance, but despite the negativity, she completed her performance successfully.
On May 9, the Israeli corporation Kan urged the European Broadcasting Union and Swedish broadcaster SVT to prevent disruptions during the semi-finals and ensure fair competition for Israel. A response from the European Broadcasting Union is awaited.
After the dress rehearsal, which pro-Palestinian activists tried to disrupt, Eden Golan stated, “I am proud to represent Israel, especially this year. I have received love and support and am determined to give my best during the semi-finals. Nothing will distract me from my work."
