On the evening of May 20, the UN Security Council rejected a resolution proposed by Russia that called for a permanent ban on the placement of weapons in space. The proposal failed to secure the nine votes required for approval.
Of the 15 Security Council members, seven countries, including the United States, Great Britain, and France, voted against the resolution.
Seven members, including China, voted in favor, and Switzerland abstained.
Russian representative Vasily Nebenzya argued that the vote demonstrated the US desire to militarize space.
In response, the British representative accused Russia of cynically trying to divert attention from its development of a new satellite with a nuclear device.
A few weeks ago, Russia used its veto power to block a draft resolution by the United States and Japan to ban nuclear weapons in space.
Moscow justified its veto by arguing for the need to adopt a resolution on a complete ban on weapons in space.
