Norway recognizes Palestinian independence
Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre announced that Norway would recognize Palestine as an independent state. This follows news that on May 22, Ireland and two other European countries will also make similar announcements.
Støre stated that recognizing Palestine is crucial to support moderate forces amidst the ongoing conflict and reinforces the importance of the two-state principle. The decision will take effect on May 28.
In recent weeks, Irish representatives have actively consulted with Spain, Slovenia, Belgium, Malta, and Norway on this issue. These countries, like Ireland, advocate for EU-wide recognition of Palestine.
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz announced the recall of ambassadors from Norway and Ireland, arguing that recognizing Palestine after the Hamas attack on Israel sends a message that terrorism pays.
