According to Reuters and The Washington Post, the FBI used technology developed by the Israeli company Cellebrite to hack into the mobile phone of Matthew Thomas Crooks, who attempted to assassinate former US President Donald Trump.
Crooks was killed by a sniper from the presidential guard, and his phone, found on his body, was transported to FBI headquarters in Quantico, Virginia, since Pittsburgh lacked the necessary equipment.
The report indicates that while potential clues were discovered on the phone, no evidence shedding light on the motive behind the crime was found. Investigators have not ruled out the possibility that Crooks may have used another phone that remains undiscovered.
Cellebrite describes itself as a digital intelligence company that provides tools for collecting, examining, and analyzing digital information to state and local governments as well as private firms. Its headquarters are located in Petah Tikva, Israel.
