US Secretary of State Antony Blinken stated the USA "was not involved in the elimination of Haniyeh and was not informed beforehand." Blinken's statement has been cited by The Washington Post and other media outlets.
Previously, a senior Hamas representative, Taher Nunu, claimed that not only Israel but also the US was responsible for the death of Ismail Haniyeh.
On the night of July 31, Ismail Haniyeh, the head of the Hamas political bureau, was killed in a missile strike in northern Tehran. His bodyguard, Waseem Abu Shaaban, was also killed. The strike targeted Haniyeh's bedroom in Tehran's special veterans' facility.
An Iranian source told the Lebanese channel Al-Mayadeen, associated with Hezbollah, that Haniyeh was killed in Tehran by a missile launched from a country other than Iran.
Israeli authorities have not commented on this.
Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the inauguration ceremony of Iran's newly elected President Masoud Pezeshkian.
