Triumph After a Decade

Florian Unruh has made an awe-inspiring return to the podium, breaking his personal medal drought by winning the recurve men’s individual gold at the 2025 Hyundai Archery World Cup in Central Florida. This marks his first individual stage victory since his memorable win in Antalya 2014.

A Perfect Performance

Unruh’s journey to success was dotted with impeccable performances, including five perfect scores of 30 points and strategically handling the tough competitors he faced. Against opponents like Dhiraj Bommadevara and Mete Gazoz, the German archer displayed unyielding precision. “To beat an archer like Gazoz, you need to hit the 10-ring as many times as you can,” Unruh explained.

Mastering the Winds

The veteran archer, now in his 12th season, credited his success to adapting well to the windy conditions at Lake Myrtle Sports Park. “I think I got to grips with the wind pretty early, and even in official practice,” Unruh shared, highlighting his strategy that was key to his victory.

Celebration in Mixed Victories

Unruh’s success wasn’t limited to individual triumphs. Alongside Michelle Kroppen, he secured another bronze in the mixed team event, adding to their impressive collection of medals. Unruh emphasized the joy of winning both individually and as a team, valuing teamwork just as much.

Emotional Moments for Recurve Women’s Champion

Meanwhile, the recurve women’s category witnessed an emotional victory by Penny Healey, whose struggles over the past 18 months made her commanding 6-0 win against Alejandra Valencia particularly poignant. Her battle and ultimate triumph amplified the emotional gravity on the podium.

As stated in World Archery, the action-packed stage in Central Florida wrapped up with the anticipation building for the next showdown in Shanghai, China, from 6-11 May.
